Verde Alpi Marble, galvanised steel, paint
shown at R Open, R Gallery
Marble is ancient, organic, and irreducibly natural, predating us by hundreds of millions of years, yet we process it with industrial precision, cutting and forcing it into the logic of production. These thin sticks push that tension to its limit: material and manufacturer both taken to the edge of what is possible, forms that sit at the threshold of breaking. The blue accents are a nod to modernism's love of the coded and the clean, its appetite for what the design world calls sexy. But something else lingers here too: the tension between the violence of our mastery over nature, and the irresistible beauty that mastery keeps producing; an ambiguity at the heart of human making.
